Stainless Steel Care

We love stainless steel for its impressive properties and its modern yet unpretentious appeal. Whether you have matte or mirrored surface finishings, here is a guide on how to best take care of your stainless steel pieces.

What is stainless steel?

Stainless steel is a family of corrosion-resistant alloy steels that contain at least 10.5% chromium. This chromium reacts with oxygen in the air and forms a protective layer. This invisible, inert layer is extremely thin but highly protective, making stainless steel resistant to corrosion and rust.

Can stainless steel rust?

If not maintained correctly, stainless steel can develop rust over time. However, the good news is that it is reversible! Stainless steel is considered a self-healing material. Its protective property rapidly self-repairs in the presence of oxygen. So even if damages, rusty spots, or scratches occur, a new layer will naturally form when exposed to air and protect the metal again.

Most rusty spots can be easily wiped off with a towel dipped in white vinegar. For heavier rusting, you can use a mixture of baking soda and water. Rub the mixture on the rust spot with a damp cloth in the direction of the grain, then wipe with a clean cloth. Rinse with water and dry thoroughly.

How to maintain stainless steel tableware and cutlery?

Cleaning:

  • Clean your stainless steel tableware and cutlery with regular dishwashing soap or place them in your dishwasher.
  • When cleaning by hand, use a soft sponge or non-abrasive cloth to gently scrub the surfaces.
  • Avoid prolonged contact with acidic liquids and rinse off any residue after use.
  • Avoid using cleaning products that contain bleach, as they can damage the protective layer of stainless steel.
  • After rinsing, it's best to dry your cutlery promptly to avoid unwanted natural drying marks. If left wet for longer periods, it can lead to rust development.

Storage:

One of the most important aspects of maintaining your stainless steel cutlery and tableware is to keep them dry in between uses.

  • After using and cleaning, dry off your pieces with a towel.
  • When storing in the dishwasher, leave it open slightly to promote quicker drying.
  • Ensure no droplets are left in between the cutlery inside your cupboard. Pay attention to slots, forks, and the serration on the edge of knives, as these are places where moisture may collect.

By following these care tips, you can keep your stainless steel tableware and cutlery looking great and extend their longevity. Just follow these steps, and you'll be able to enjoy the beauty of your stainless steel for many years to come!
